RIO DE JANEIRO, November 18. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov supported Brazil's proposal at the Group of 20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro to set up an alliance to fight hunger and poverty, ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"Sergey Lavrov, who is representing Russia at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, spoke at the first plenary session devoted to the fight against poverty and hunger. The head of the Russian delegation supported Brazil's initiative to create a global alliance to fight hunger and poverty and spoke about our country's efforts to ensure food security in developing countries," she told reporters.

Russia’s top diplomat also noted the significant contribution that BRICS is making to solve the issues of global development, which was reflected in the results of the BRICS Summit in Kazan. Lavrov highlighted "the neocolonial practices of the collective West that hinder the establishment of truly equitable international cooperation."

The G20 summit, attended by leaders of G20 countries and other nations invited by Brazil, is taking place in Rio de Janeiro from November 18 to 19. According to Brazilian officials, 42 countries are participating.
