Jacob Zuma: Brics plans not at risk

«Планы стран БРИКС не пострадают из-за экономического спада в Китае или из-за снижения цен на нефть, которое влияет на российскую экономику», - президент ЮАР Джейкоб Зума.

“The plans put in place by the Brics nations are not in jeopardy because of China's economic slowdown or because of the effect the oil price drop is having on the Russian economy”, - President Jacob Zuma said.

The Brics nations consist of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, five of the world's key emerging economies. As a bloc, Brics accounts for almost 40 percent of the world's population and $16-trillion (R185-trillion) in gross domestic product.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Zuma said that the Brics bloc was "a very important factor in the gloabl economy" and that the bloc's commitments would not be affected by China and Russia's issues.

President Zuma added that everything would be alright once the Brics development bank was established.

"The conversation is saying, Brics is here to stay," Zuma was quoted as saying by the Business Report.

"We would have our own resources to finance ourselves and finance the developing countries. For the first time, the developing countries are beginning to say there is a bank that is going to be doing things differently and it is going to have a branch on the African continent," he added.

The South African president said that the Brics nations were strong countries that had resources to fall back on.

"These countries are very strong and they are very independent-thinking countries, and they've got resources, particularly if we talk China, Russia and India," Zuma said.

"It’s a grouping that's developing a different frame of mind. It's an important factor in the global economy," he added.
